The US Open is one of the most important tournaments for golf players. Hence, every year thousands of golfers try to get qualified for the event. Well, not everyone makes it to the main round. USGA has some selection criteria that the players must fulfill.
The US Open Golf 2021 live stream will start in mid-June, where players from different countries will participate. So, finally, who made it to the great event? You’ll find the list later in this article. Let’s learn about the selection criteria that a player must fulfill.
Selection Criteria
There are multiple ways golf players can get qualified for the prestigious championship event. Both amateur and professionals can participate in the qualifying round. However, the amateurs will get the chance only if they have a handicap index of 1.4 or better.
The selection process for the US Open 2021 live stream will be in two ways. First, few players will be selected automatically if they meet certain criteria. The rest of the amateurs and pros will play qualifying matches. Below are all the details.
Automatic Selection
If a player meets the following criteria, he will automatically be selected for the main round:
- Have won the US Open title at least once in the previous ten years.
- Won any of the major golf tournaments, including the Masters, PGA Tour, and British Open, in the last five years.
- Who finished on top 15 in last year’s European tour.
- In the previous year, who finished on the top 30 money list of the PGA.
- If ranked on the top 50 list of the world golf rankings in the previous two weeks of the tournament.
So, if someone has his name in any of the listings above, he will automatically be selected for the championship event. He doesn’t need to go through any qualifying round.
Qualifying Matches
If not selected, the player must compete against other golfers in the qualifying rounds before the event. The amateurs also have to play against some pros to prove their worth. First, the players have to play a local qualifying round. The top performer will then perform in the final qualifier.
The local qualifying round for the 2021 US Open Golf has been going on for some time. Next, from May 24, the players will start to compete in the final qualifying round. This round will end on the 7th of June.
